Homework for Week Two
Haiku Hmk: 1. Read thirty one translations of Frog Haiku with Commentary at following link:
http://www.bopsecrets.org/gateway/passages/basho-frog.htm
2. Read/Research additional background of haiku, tradition, etc.
3. Make at least one attempt at "method" translation (recollecting actual spirit of scene--e.g. visit pond, meditate on
frog, etc. Note: virtual visits on computer allowed too)
4. Write an original translation of haiku and post with brief commentary (3 sentences or less) in comments section under Haiku hmk. Include a sentence or two regarding your "method" approach.
Alternatively, create your account now and post on blog (to see how this will work)
Reading Hmk: Complete all readings in syllabus for next class.
Short Paper #1: Put Borges' story in context of any craft/theory/creative approach found in the other readings. Please keep paper
exactly 1 typed page (double spaced, 12 font, 1" margins). Please email to Roger by attachment no later than
Friday, Sept. 10. Sedarat@yahoo.com
Craft Exercise: Select 1-3 pages from any literary source text (ST) written in language other than English. Translate it to the best of your ability. First do as accurate as a rough transliteration as possible. Then, attempt a more seamless, literary draft. Next, highlight all verbs throughout the translation. For each verb, offer at least two alternatives. Circle or highlight your final choice, and explain/justify your decision. Please attempt to post to blog (Roger will do his best to set this up). Please also print 3 copies of your own and bring to class.
